 | The designs do not translate to the theme, design origin, and naming convention of the Pokemon. Here are some examples: Infernape- thematically based on Sun Wukong, the Monkey "King", making it apparently female somewhat loses the resemblance. Fennekin line- thematically based on Mages, giving the male counterpart a sword does not make it a mage, could've done the wizard route. Greninja (Ash-Greninja)- The entire point of it's design is to resemble like Ash's XY outfit. Making a female version that does not resemble it's form's namesake does not make it the same. Popplio line- thematically based on sirens and singers, most likely opera, giving it a spiky design for males does not give a clue on what it's supposed to be based on.  | Most of these would make some pretty solid regional variants. But when it comes to Pokemon, and the gender differences, they're usually far more subtle. Like Pikachu's tail, or Dodrio's necks being a different color. Xatu's stripes differ in number between male and female.  | I like the ones where the original form is humanoid and looks like it belongs to a specific gender, like Blaziken, Samurott, Chesnaught and Primarina. The others, not so much. What in most Grass starters design makes you automatically think they're male? They're all quite ambiguous, except Chesnaught. Same goes with at least half the other starters.
